SANTA FE -- In a statement delivered today, Democratic Party of New Mexico Chairman Brian Colon threw his support behind Sen. Barack Obama in the Democratic Party's closely contested presidential battle. Colon is also an automatic superdelegate to the party's national convention in Denver, and as such, his one vote could have outsized influence as the jockeying for support between Obama and Sen. Hillary Clinton continues.
Politico.com just posted the following regarding Colon's announcement: "the endorsement brings the total number of superdelegates to endorse Barack Obama to 255. Senator Obama is 277 delegates away from securing the Democratic nomination."
In his statement, Colon tipped his hat to "two very talented candidates," but said that Obama has the edge.
Barack Obama has proven to inspire a movement that has brought a record number of people into the process. He’s proven to be a candidate who can compete and will fight hard to expand the Democratic Party’s reach and put Western states in play in the general election. His message of change is resonating across all ages, races and economic backgrounds in New Mexico.
Yet, in New Mexico's Democratic presidential caucus held Feb. 5, Clinton edged Obama by 1,123 votes, or by less than 1 percent of the total votes cast. Since then, both Gov. Bill Richardson and US Sen. Jeff Bingaman, both fellow Democratic superdelegates, have announced their support for Obama.

Maybe Colon is not from the “old school” after all.
