The ads attacking Tom Udall on oil drilling and other issues seem to be working, as Udall’s support has been cut in half since the last poll.

This month, Udall holds a lead of 10 points, 51 percent to 41 percent, over Steve Pearce. When leaners are included, Udall’s lead drops to 52 percent to 44 percent. The silver lining for the Democratic candidate is that his support is still at more than 50 percent.

A month ago, Udall’s lead was 59 percent to 34 percent.

According to Rasmussen, Pearce has gained in support among several groups.

Pearce appears to have gained ground most among members of his own party and unaffiliated voters. He now has the support of 84% of Republicans while Udall is backed by 83% of Democrats.

The candidates are now even among men. Udall still maintains a commanding 54% to 35% lead among women voters, but this is only half the margin he had in July.

This poll’s results confirm the thoughts of many election analysts who believed the race would narrow as November neared.
