Before the Senate recessed for the day, Sen. Shannon Robinson, D-Albuquerque, took the floor to attack several nonprofits he has blamed for his loss in June.
Robinson and two other lawmakers who were defeated in June filed a lawsuit earlier this summer that takes aim at several nonprofits. In that lawsuit Robinson has accused the nonprofits of conspiring to hide money and of committing fraud.
Robinson also started asking other senators during his speech how much they know about the nonprofits’ campaign and the mailers that are at the center of the controversy.
"I’m on a manhunt," he said. And I am going to track it down. Follow the money."
Robinson’s speech is coming on the same day that the Attorney General’s Office is meeting with the Secretary of State’s office to advise it how to treat New Mexico Youth Organized, the nonprofit that helped distribute the mailers at the center of the controversy. At issue is the nonprofit’s status and whether it should be considered a political action committee and be governed by stricter regulations. If it were determined to be a political action committee, the nonprofit would have to disclose its donors. Nonprofits are not required to disclose their donors.
Robinson has accused the nonprofits of conspiring together and hiding money in their successful effort to knock off three Democratic incumbents, including himself, in the June 3 primary.
"These nonprofit watchdogs are anything but that," Robinson said to the chamber. "They don’t have a right to be a nonprofit. They are going to have to face charges of tax evasion. This is a scheme to avoid taxes."
He continued: "We are going to see in the next few months … the state Supreme Court will back us up on that. I think the AG will back us up," Robinson said.
During his speech, Robinson appeared to accuse Sen. Gerald Ortiz Y Pino of participating in a conspiracy of silence.
"Sen. Ortiz y Pino will not comment," Robinson said. "He knows if he talks about it he can get indicted."
Robinson then turned questions toward Sen. Cisco McSorley, D-Albuquerque.
McSorley would have none of it, however. "I dont know of anything of what you are talking about. I have no idea of what you are talking about," McSorley said to Robinson.
"There you have it," Robinson said.
