Senators Remark on VP Chances

By Matthew Reichbach 05/14/2008

The Hill newspaper out of Washington, D.C. asked 97 Senators “If you were asked, would you accept an offer to be the VP nominee?” The three who were not asked (John McCain R-AZ, Barack Obama, D-IL and Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y.) are still currently running for President.

Both New Mexico Senators, Republican Pete Domenici and Democrat Jeff Bingaman, however, responded to the request:

Sen. Jeff Bingaman (D-N.M.) “I don’t expect to be asked. That’s one advantage of being from a small state. I would doubt that’s in the cards. And I’ve got a day job already.”
Sen. Pete Domenici (R-N.M.) “No. I’m too old.”

The current Vice-President, Dick Cheney, is from a smaller state than New Mexico (Wyoming). Domenici, 76, is five years older than John McCain; McCain was born on Aug. 29, 1936 while Domenici was born on May 7, 1932.

Two other Republicans responded they were too old for the job; Thad Cochran, 70, of Mississippi; Chuck Grassley, 74, of Iowa.

Other responses from Senators were more light-hearted. Robert Byrd, D-W.Va., said, “No, I can already preside over the Senate, and I do not enjoy spending a lot of time at ‘undisclosed locations.’ ”

Mel Martinez, R-FL would respond, “I’d say, ‘Please read the Constitution.’ I wasn’t born in America; I can’t be VP."
